Car Seats Without Tris: Britax Car Seats or Orbit Baby?Are you looking for children’s car seats without Tris? First what is Tris? Baby products such as car seats, child carriers, pillows and bassinet pads all commonly contain the flame retardant, chlorinated Tris. California classifies Tris as a carcinogen. Many of the Britax car seats as well as most all of the other top selling children’s car seats contain Tris as a flame retardant. I’m a big Britax fan so what’s the story here? The Ecology Center Has Test Hundreds of Car Seats for Toxic ChemicalsThe Ecology Center which has tested hundreds of car seats has asked most of the major manufacturers of baby and children’s products to phase out the use of Tris and other toxic chemicals. Recently the Ecology Center had good news to report. On March 7, 2012 Britax issued a statement saying they were in the process of eliminating hazardous flame retardants from their car seats by the end of 2012. The Ecology Center issued a statement saying that Orbit Baby and Britax prove that manufacturers can make a product that is free from toxic chemicals and thanked them for forging ahead with safer products. Orbit Baby Car SeatsOrbit Baby is a company that has boasted that their car seats are free of toxic chemicals for a few years. Orbit Baby is to be congratulated for leading the way. So why aren’t the Orbit Baby seats more popular? Let’s take a look at the Orbit Baby toddler seat. This seat is one of the few car seats without Tris. This seat is designed for toddlers rear facing from 15-35 pounds and then forward facing up to 65 pounds. This basically means that you’ll need another seat for your newborn and then a booster after your child grows out of this seat. High Price with Mediocre ReviewsThis Orbit Baby seat sells on Amazon currently for $320 which is very high for a seat that will have to be replaced for a booster seat. Britax car seats can be priced in the mid $200’s but will last for many years. The other negative regarding the Orbit Baby seats are they only get mediocre reviews from owners. The toddler seat has 44 customer reviews with an average rating of 3.5 stars out of 5 stars possible. All of the Britax car seats have ratings of 4.5 stars out of 5 stars. I would recommend reading the reviews on Amazon for the Orbit Baby seats if you’re considering buying. I applaud Orbit Baby for being one of the first car seats without Tris but there are other negatives to this seat.
